BMW 2021+ MG1 DME Bench Unlock & OBD Flash Patch

Beginning around June 2020 production, BMW introduced a new generation of security on Bosch MG1 engine control units (DMEs). These protection mechanisms were designed to prevent aftermarket software modifications by blocking access to the ECU's internal memory and preventing unauthorized programming through the OBD diagnostic port.

As a result, conventional OBD tuning methods no longer work on these newer DMEs without specialized preparation.

Complete Two-Step Service

Although commonly referred to as a DME Unlock, the complete service actually consists of two distinct operations performed on your original Bosch MG1 engine control unit.

Both procedures are included as part of our standard service.

Step 1 – Permanent Aurix™ TriCore™ Memory Unlock

Modern BMW MG1 DMEs use security mechanisms implemented within the Infineon Aurix™ TriCore™ microcontroller to prevent access to the ECU's internal memory.

This protection prevents direct reading and modification of the DME's software, making traditional tuning methods impossible.

During the first stage of our service, this protection is permanently removed from your original DME.

Once completed, the ECU's internal memory remains accessible for supported programming operations and this procedure does not normally need to be repeated.

Step 2 – OBD Flash Authentication Patch

The second layer of protection controls what software the DME will accept through the vehicle's OBD diagnostic port.

In its factory configuration, the DME verifies the authenticity of incoming flash data and rejects calibration files that are not digitally signed by BMW.

After the Aurix TriCore memory protection has been removed, the DME software is updated with the required OBD flash authentication patch.

This modification enables compatible aftermarket tuning platforms to write supported calibration files through the OBD port without requiring another bench procedure under normal operating conditions.

Why Both Operations Are Required

These two security layers serve completely different purposes.

The Aurix TriCore memory protection prevents access to the DME's internal memory.

The OBD authentication protection prevents the ECU from accepting flash data that is not authentically signed by BMW.

Together, these security mechanisms effectively prevented previous tuning methods from accessing or modifying the DME.
